INDOT’s innovative design-build contracting techniques and innovative bidding procedures were used to minimize the closure of the bridge.
KYTC and INDOT used innovative construction contracting techniques to minimize the closure of the US 421 bridge and to reduce interruption of its service to the businesses and residents of the historic districts. This included the use of INDOT’s design-build contracting techniques. Innovative bidding procedures minimized the number of days the bridge is closed to traffic, reducing the originally anticipated 365-day closure to approximately 10 days. With design-build, the design and construction phases of the project overlap, shortening the completion time of the project.
