FERRY SERVICE
Free ferry service will be available during the bridge closure to help maintain traffic for some of the 11,000 drivers who use the US 421 bridge each day. Studies show that the economic impact of the bridge closure on the communities would be lessened by use of the ferry service.
The ferry service can handle 40 percent of daily bridge traffic. Other drivers will use the nearest Ohio River crossings 26 miles upstream at the Markland Dam Bridge or 46 miles downstream in Louisville. Additional measures are being encouraged to offset ferry demand such as car and van pooling and staggered shifts at area businesses.

The construction contract is expected to be awarded in the fall of 2010, with construction efforts beginning as soon as possible after the contractor is named. The winning contractor is expected to submit a project schedule, including the anticipated bridge closure period. Free ferry service will be offered during the bridge closure. While contractors will be permitted to close the bridge to traffic for a maximum of 12 months, efforts are being made toward a shorter closure.
